It is composed of calcareous debris that are consolidated by a calcareous cement.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 149px;\">\n<td style=\"width: 25.9897%; height: 135px;\" valign=\"top\" width=\"\" height=\"\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>Colour and structure<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 74.0103%; text-align: justify; height: 135px;\" valign=\"top\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">According to the actual composition of the stone, its structures and geological history, the iron rich minerals contained within the Pierre Jaune are more or less oxidised. The resulting variations in colour (pale yellow, ochre, golden, purplish, reddish, bluish, greenish\u2026) and the structure lead to the <a href=\"https:\/\/conservation-science.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/astuce_pierrejaune_couleurmurartificiel.jpg\">lively<\/a> aspect of this stone<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 151px;\">\n<td style=\"width: 25.9897%; height: 94px;\" valign=\"top\" width=\"\" height=\"\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>Test with acid<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 74.0103%; text-align: justify; height: 94px;\" valign=\"top\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Calcite (CaCO3), the main mineral constituent of limestone, reacts with diluted hydrochloric acid (HCl 10% = 2.87 M). Despite the high porosity, the absorption of moisture by capillary suction is low (specific capillary coefficient between 1 and 11 mg\/cm\u00b2.min\u00bd and linear capillary coefficient between 0.1 and 0.4 cm\/min\u00bd). These imbibition kinetics lead to only a minor filling of the pore volume (Hirschwald coefficient between 0.06 and 0.25), and it implies that it is resistant towards frost damage. This is enhanced by its fast and efficient drying. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"> Its good compression resistance (between 10 and 23 N\/mm2), its very small hygric (between 0.2 and 0.7 mm\/m in 72h) and thermal (between 3.4 et 11 x 10-6 mm\/mm.\u00b0C \u00e0 70\u00b0C) dilatation are both technical characteristics which explain the very good durability of this stone.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"> Nevertheless, observations show that Pierre Jaune is relatively sensible to alterations caused by salts, which probably explains why the bases of buildings made from Pierre Jaune are often constructed in hard and dense stone.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 157px;\">\n<td style=\"width: 25.3012%; height: 111px;\" valign=\"top\" width=\"\" height=\"\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>Most frequent alterations<\/strong> <\/span><\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 74.6988%; text-align: justify; height: 111px;\" valign=\"top\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Observations on numerous buildings made from Pierre Jaune show that the most frequent alteration are more of an aesthetic than a structural matter, like the brown patinas formed on elements not directly exposed to rain (<a href=\"https:\/\/conservation-science.ch\/astuce_pierrejaune_placeduport2_01\/\">example<\/a>). <\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A FEW HINTS ON RECOGNISING&#8230;
